I read this fabulous booklet by Erin Doran about seeing her baby boys and marveling over the wonder of their beings. About fun days at home exploring the world and their family being a happy place…and then…her first son went off to school. She got notes that he wasn’t like “The Other” kids, he didn’t pay attention like “The Other” kids with the underlying message that something was wrong with him and she needed to do something about it. This scenario played out again when her second son began school.
So who the heck are “The Others” anyway? We’ve all heard it or we’ve wanted to be just the “The Others” with their clothes, hair, friends, etc. We hear…line up like “The Others”, dance like “The Others”, play ball like “The Others”. Many are bullied because they’re not like “The Others”. OMG! We were never intended to like “The Others”. Each of us is a 1 in 400 trillion miracle! We were born with our particular hair type/color, eye shape/color, brain and body type. Each of us process information differently, love differently and play differently. We are here on planet earth especially at this particular time and place to contribute OUR special gifts and talents.
Love the miracle that is you! Be grateful for your circumstances or change them! Honor yourself. Honor others and honor your child’s unique being. If there are too many complaints about you or your children not being like “The Others” Phooey! Walk away and place yourself in a healthy environment where “The Others” love and appreciate your unique gifts, talents and spirit. Then when you contribute your gifts to the world “The Others” will be thankful that you were brave enough to be the miracle that is YOU! Just ask the geeks who grew up to be moguls in the computer industry or the researchers that created lifesaving medications…they were never like “The Others”.
